Book Review: Anzac Memorial Bridge: A Century of Service

ANZAC Memorial Bridge: a century of service book cover

Anzac Memorial Bridge: A Century of Service, compiled by FOAB secretary and treasurer Glenys E Hansen, was launched at the Eketāhuna Community Centre in December 2022.

The book features the history of the bridge, a biography of Alfred Falkner (penned by yours truly) and also biographies of the 9 service personnel memorialised on the bridge.

A Century of Service will be of interest not only to Kaiparoro locals keen to read about the men and women immortalised on the bridge, but also to the wider descendants and those interested in the social history of New Zealand, particularly the Wairarapa, during the early 1900s.

The book records “key moments in the life of the bridge”: Including a 1918 article from the Wairarapa Daily Times about three men whose car became stranded in the Makakahi Stream, cementing the need for a bridge.

Anzac Memorial Bridge: A Century of Service is available at Aratoi and Paper Plus in Masterton. To order a copy, email anzac.bridge1922@gmail.com.  Also available, an A4 photogragh of the bridge, ready to put in a standard A4 frame – $20.
