His father was born in New Zealand. His mother in England. It was quite a surprise to me that he had almost a quarter Scottish, as his cultural background (in part to his mother) was decidedly English. His paternal grandmother’s family, the Christies, were from Glasgow, Lanarkshire. As I researched further back, however, his ancestors’ birthplaces included Kinross-shire and Fife.

Mum’s ethnicity wasn’t at all surprising. She hails from a well-known Wellington immigrant family with numerous offspring from the Somerset region. In addition, one of her paternal branches emigrated with the Rev. Norman McLeod from the Isle of Harris via Nova Scotia to Waipu, New Zealand.
